What happens when a man hears a guilty verdict in a Texas courtroom and suddenly collapses after drinking from his water bottle?

This week on Pushing Up Lilies, I’m examining the unusual death of Edward Peter LeClair, a 57-year-old man convicted of five counts of sexual assault of a child. Moments after the verdicts were announced, LeClair became critically ill and died. Months later, the medical examiner confirmed sodium nitrite poisoning and ruled his death a suicide.

As a forensic nurse and former death investigator, I’ll explain how this type of poisoning affects the body’s ability to carry oxygen, why toxicology is so important, and how investigators piece together an unexpected death.
